Remembering Sister Régine-Marie: Bringing Knowledge and Hope to Impoverished Children in Kampong Chhnang

Sister Régine-Marie NGUYỄN THỊ CHIÊU, a religious sister of the Sisters of Providence, passed away at 11:45 PM on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at the Cù Lao Giêng retirement home of the Sisters of Providence in Vietnam, at the age of 83, having served 69 years in religious life.

Sister Régine-Marie was born on March 23, 1943, in Kandal Province, Cambodia. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence in 1958 and made her perpetual vows in 1968, dedicating her entire life to serving God and the people in both Cambodia and Vietnam.

In her missionary journey, she was assigned to Kampong Chhnang Province on December 17, 2002. Upon her initial arrival, she resided in a small room beneath the roof of the old church in Kampong Chhnang town. Moved by compassion and witnessing the poverty of the children in the Phsar Kraom area, in 2004 she began gathering children from local villages and floating boats to teach them basic literacy. What started as a modest class with only four to five children gradually expanded into Grades 1 through 3 in the Khmer language, serving nearly 100 students. The classes she patiently nurtured laid the essential foundation for the construction of a new primary school at Phsar Kraom in 2009. Beyond teaching, she regularly visited families living on floating houses, shared food, and conducted ongoing home-based faith formation.

The funeral services for Sister Régine-Marie are being held at the chapel of the Cù Lao Giêng retirement home in Vietnam. The reception of the body took place on the morning of October 30, 2026, and the funeral procession and Requiem Mass will take place on the morning of Saturday, October 31, 2026.

Sister Régine-Marie's passing leaves behind profound sorrow, yet her boundless compassion and the educational legacy she cultivated for the impoverished children of Kampong Chhnang will endure in memory forever.
